The Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia and a masterpiece of modern architecture. Officially opened in 1973, this grand venue serves as a world-class performing arts center, hosting operas, ballets, theater productions, concerts, and cultural events.
Beyond its role as a cultural hub, the Opera House is also surrounded by fantastic spots for dining, sightseeing, and soaking up panoramic city views. And in today's post, I'm excited to share my personal favorite spots for capturing stunning photos of the Sydney Opera House. These are the locations I always recommend to friends and family, and I hope they'll help you capture some unforgettable memories during your visit to Sydney.
- In Front of the Opera House.
This is probably the most photographed view of the Sydney Opera House, and for good reason! It's the main entrance to the Opera House and the address that pops up on Google Maps. Plus, it's where taxis, buses, and trains drop off and pick up passengers.

I snapped this photo at the Opera Bar, which is nestled right at the foot of the Opera House. This place is always buzzing with activity, so if you want to capture a shot without any crowds, you'll need to either arrive super early or stay super late! 😀. I took this photo around 11 or 12 at night, after most of the tourists had already headed home.
Or you can try capturing a close-up shot like this one, which reduces the chances of unwanted photobombers!
The Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who drew inspiration from the graceful sails of boats gliding across the harbor. In 2007, this architectural masterpiece was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, solidifying its place as a global icon.
2. Cahill Walk Lookout
Address: https://maps.app.goo.gl/cKErPQNTMB1MpTrQ9
This is an elevated pedestrian walkway that runs alongside the Cahill Expressway, giving you the perfect vantage point to admire and photograph two iconic landmarks: the Darling Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
Just follow the Google Maps address I've included above, hop in the elevator, and head up to the third floor to reach the Cahill Walk.
And here's a bonus tip: If you visit in late October or early November, you can capture the vibrant jacaranda trees in full bloom, with the Harbour Bridge and Opera House as a stunning backdrop. For more amazing jacaranda spotting locations, be sure to check out my post "Where to Find the Best Jacaranda Trees in Sydney" HERE.
3. In front of Quay Restaurant.

From this spot, I captured a stunning frontal view of the Opera House, resulting in one of my favorite shots. Click on the photo to check out the camera settings and equipment I used to achieve this shot.
If you're looking for a more luxurious experience, you can enjoy a meal at Quay restaurant, which boasts one of the best views of the Sydney Opera House in the entire city. To guarantee a table with a view, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance on their website: https://www.quay.com.au/
4. Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
Address: https://maps.app.goo.gl/oy1sZpfMkEr7dEsh9
This sprawling 30-hectare botanic garden, located to the right of the Opera House, is a true oasis in the heart of the city. Open daily from 7 am to 10 pm, and completely free to enter, it's a haven for nature lovers, with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and stunning harbor views. It's a popular spot for jogging, picnicking, and simply escaping the hustle and bustle of city life.
Within this sprawling garden, there's a specific spot that offers a postcard-perfect panorama of the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, and the city skyline stretching out behind it.

And just a few hundred meters further along the path, you'll stumble upon another fantastic photo opportunity: a picture-perfect frame of the Harbour Bridge with the Opera House nestled perfectly beneath it.

5. Harbour Bridge
For a truly unique perspective, why not capture the Opera House from above? The Harbour Bridge, another iconic symbol of Sydney, offers breathtaking views of the city and its harbor.
No drone is needed - this elevated view is easily accessible.

After crossing the Harbour Bridge, we'll arrive at our next Opera House photo spot, located right behind it. This area is usually less crowded with tourists, offering a more peaceful setting compared to other locations.
Plus, there's a sweet little spot under the bridge where you can chill and soak up the Opera House views.
