Kumamoto is a prefecture in the Kyushu island region of Japan, with the entire western region bordering the sea, the remaining areas surrounded by rolling mountains. Kumamoto is famous for Aso - one of the largest volcanoes in the world that is still active and often has smoke rising. I had the opportunity to visit Aso in the summer of 2024, and the view of the road leading to Aso made me extremely overwhelmed by its majesty. And this article will share my trip to Aso, along with the pictures I took here, let's see what is here that makes me so excited 😉

On the way from Kumamoto city center to Aso crater, I passed by Komezuma, and the scene here made me stop the car all day just to take pictures 😀
I stopped here when the scenery became so beautiful, with rolling mountains in front, and on the left were herds of cows and horses that were raised by the locals here.
This road also has a fairly large parking area for tourists to stop and admire the scenery, so I also have more time to walk around this area to take pictures.
From this road you can see a dormant volcano crater.
After taking pictures here, I continued to follow the road to Mount Aso. And the higher I went, the more beautiful the scenery became, with many panoramic views down below.
However, these cows are not very "friendly", so please be careful when approaching to take pictures 😀
Let's take a look at some of the pictures I took here, before moving on to the next location.
This is probably the most beautiful road I have ever been on, with mountains right in front and a view of the city from above on the left.
After taking pictures here, I moved to the last location, which was also the main location of my trip today – Komezuka.

Komezuka is a unique cone-shaped hill located in the Mount Aso area, an extremely beautiful tourist destination every summer.
Komezuka is famous for its almost perfect shape, resembling a cone or an upside-down pile of rice. Because of this shape, it is called “Komezuka,” which means “pile of rice” in Japanese.
This hill is about 50 meters high and about 80 meters in diameter, covered with a lush green color of young grass.
Komezuka has a shape quite similar to the mountains in anime movies.
When I arrived here, it was about 5pm, so I decided to stay and watch the sunset here.
It seemed like there would be no sunset today, because the clouds were quite thick and covered the sun…
But I ended a perfect day in Kumamoto with a sunset that couldn't be more beautiful.
And I returned to the center of Kumamoto city right after sunset, to continue my journey to explore the provinces of Kyushu in the following days. Please follow my series of articles about Kyushu in the next articles. Thank you for reading to the end of the article.
