When you feel too bored with the crowd and bustle in the center of Osaka, want to leave the city to go to a peaceful, quiet place and find peace for yourself, this is the choice. very good for you – Hozan-ji Temple.

The temple is located on Mount Ikoma, a mountain located between the boundaries of Nara and Osaka cities, and is only 20km east of Namba (Osaka's busiest shopping center).

The area around Hozan-ji was originally a training ground for Buddhist monks. The name of the temple at that time was Daisho-Mudo-ji (大聖無動寺).

The temple was founded in 1678, and became one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the area during the Edo period.

History of Hozan-ji Temple.

To get to Hozan-ji, you have to go to Ikoma station, then change to a tugboat (a special type of train pulled by cable, specializing in tourist destinations located in high mountains). This is also Japan's first, oldest and longest tugboat to date (opened for business in 1918, 105 years old now!).

You didn't see wrong, this is the train towing you to the top of the mountain :)))
A dog and a cat can handle it :)))

Or if you like hard core and mountain climbing like all ancient monks, you will have to climb about 3km to reach this temple. The distance is not long, but it will be quite a challenge for those who are not used to climbing. In return, this is a really, really beautiful road, exactly like what you see in Anime movies. You can see more photos on that road of mine at This.

The road leading to Hozan-ji gate is also very wonderful, in late April and early May they will light up lights on both sides of the road in the evening, as a special ceremony of the temple.

People come here to pray for luck, peace and especially fortune.

A very special thing that I have never seen at any other temple in Japan that I have been to is that most of the boxes to toss coins for good luck at the temple are in the shape of a large money bag. Brings luck and fortune to those who come to pray.

Everyone can toss a 5 Yen coin here and pray.

The architecture of the temple is also very special.

Climbing up the stairs at the top, you can see from afar a Buddha statue located in a cliff.

Going deep inside is a road with dense Buddha statues and statues of ancient monks on both sides.

At the end of this road, we come to the main hall of the temple.
