Continue the series places to see hydrangeas Today, I will introduce to you the most beautiful places to see hydrangeas in Kyoto. And as usual, you can absolutely go to all of those places in the same day. Let's explore together.

  1. Yoshiminedera (吉峰寺)

The first place I want to introduce is Yoshiminedera, an ancient Buddhist temple, founded in 1029, located in the western part of Kyoto.

Hydrangeas at Yoshimine Dera Temple - Kyoto.

This temple is located in the mountains, far from the city center, so traveling will be a bit difficult. But because it is located far from the center, this place will avoid crowds of people visiting, thereby giving you more space to admire the flowers and take photos.

The temple's extremely airy space for viewing hydrangeas.

About how to get there, first you need to go to JR Mukōmachi station, then take bus number 66 parked in front of the station, go about 30 minutes to the last stop which is Yoshiminedera Temple. The first bus of the day is at 8:35 a.m., every 1 hour, and the last bus from the temple to JR Mukōmachi station is at 3:24 p.m. Please pay attention to arranging your departure and return times accordingly. .

In my opinion, to be able to go to many places to see hydrangeas in Kyoto in one day, you should start early with Yoshimine Dera, then spend time for the next places.

This temple is located in the mountains, so the flowers often bloom later than usual. When I arrived at the temple on June 8, 2024, the flowers were just starting to bloom. It is expected that the best blooming time is from June 15 onwards.

The campus of this temple is also extremely large, with many ancient architectural works, and surrounding them are gardens of wisteria, hydrangeas as well as ornamental plants and bonsai.

There are even a few red-leafed trees here, right in the middle of summer!

Hydrangeas at Yoshiminedera

Hydrangeas in Yoshiminedera grow in abundance, close together, with many trees taller than a person's head, making taking photos extremely easy.

The flowers here have three main colors: purple blue, pink purple, and light green.

In addition, because it is located on the mountain, we can also easily see the city from above, and take photos with hydrangeas like this.

Admission to Yoshimine Dera is 500 JPY for adults, 200 JPY for children.

Rating: 9/10. The only downside is that it takes a long time to travel. In return, the space is quiet, fresh air, the hydrangea garden is extremely large, the flowers grow tall, and are easy to take photos.

This temple is very close to Take no michi - the second bamboo forest in Kyoto, the place that I introduced to you in the previous article. If you have extra time, you can also go together after visiting Yoshimine Dera.

2. Mimurotoji (三室戸寺)

This is a Buddhist temple, founded in 770, located in the north of Uji city, Kyoto prefecture. This place is also known as "Flower temple" - flower temple, with tens of thousands of different flowers blooming according to the season, such as cherry blossoms in spring, wisteria in May, hydrangeas in May. June, and lotus in July-August.

In contrast to Yoshimine Dera, Mimurotoji is very easy to get to, just go to Mimurodo station, then walk about 10 minutes to get there. For this reason, many people choose this as a place to visit and take photos with hydrangeas every June.

The main hall of the temple worships the thousand-armed Buddha.

In front of the main hall, there are statues of cows and rabbits. It is believed that if you touch the stone ball inside the cow's mouth it will bring you luck.

In front of the main hall there are also many pots of lotus flowers, and all of them will bloom between July and August every year.

Located inside the same campus is a red three-story pagoda, a shrine to Amitabha Buddha. And finally, see the angles for taking photos of hydrangeas at this temple.

The hydrangea corner is located near the main electrical area.

The hydrangeas here are more diverse in color than Yoshimine Dera, from red, pink, purple, white, blue, green, ...

Located between the main hall of the temple, with the hydrangea garden area, you will pass by a Japanese-style garden, with traditional scenery, such as red leaves, bonsai trees, Koi fish ponds, ...

After going through the Japanese garden, you will reach the hydrangea garden with a very large campus.

This garden has about 10,000 hydrangeas. Flowers grow in clusters and come in many different colors. In the garden, there are also many stone benches for people to rest and admire the scenery. The time I go is June 9, 2024, the flowers here have just started to bloom, it is expected that the flowers will bloom at their best from June 15.

Rating: 10/10. Large campus, diverse photography angles, many different seasonal flowers and close to the train station, convenient for transportation.

Admission is 1000 JPY for adults.

This temple is also very close to Byodoin Temple (10 yen temple) and the famous matcha village in Uji that I wrote about before. If you have time left after sightseeing, you can walk to Byodoin. Walking time is about 15-20 minutes.
