RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) is a globally recognized university specializing in engineering and technology, located in the heart of Melbourne , Australia. Renowned not only for its world-class education, RMIT also captivates visitors with its distinctive architecture — a fascinating blend of centuries-old heritage buildings and bold, modern designs.

Join me today as we explore the school through the photos I’ve taken.

I began my my RMIT photo shoot at the Old Magistrates' Court (Building 20), a courthouse over a century old, showcasing classic Edwardian architecture.

Formerly a well-known courtroom, The Old Magistrates' Court is now part of the RMIT campus, repurposed to host law classes, media programs, and various events.

This spot is also a popular choice for couples taking wedding photos, thanks to its unique classical architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Since the building is rarely open to the public, it offers privacy without the worry of disturbing others.

My RMIT University photoshoot schedule today.

Next, I stepped into RMIT’s main campus on La Trobe Street, just across from the the Victoria State Library. Right at the entrance stands the Francis Ormond Building (Building 1) – the historic heart of the university.

Built in the late 19th century, the Francis Ormond Building is the historic heart of the RMIT campus. Its red brick exterior, grand arched windows, and intricate Victorian details reflect its origins as Victoria’s first technical school.

What makes this building special is how its interior has been transformed into modern classrooms and workspaces, while the exterior remains almost completely preserved in its original, historic form. Stepping inside feels like crossing a time portal—where the past and present exist side by side.

The next stop on my visit was Storey Hall (Building 16), positioned right at the corner of La Trobe and Swanston Streets.

Storey Hall is arguably one of the most striking and unconventional buildings in Melbourne. It uniquely blends Victorian architecture with bold modern design, inspired by fractal mathematics and spatial geometry.

The building’s exterior is wrapped in a bold blue-violet façade, patterned with repeating polygonal shapes—a nod to mathematical precision and a symbol of RMIT’s creative and academic spirit. Inside, you’ll find lecture theatres, exhibition halls, and event spaces that regularly host international exhibitions and conferences.

The final stop for my photo tour at RMIT was the Swanston Academic Building (Building 80).

In striking contrast to the older structures around it, the Swanston Academic Building showcases RMIT’s leadership in modern design. Situated just next to Storey Hall, it’s instantly recognizable by its vibrant, asymmetrical geometric façade.

Above is everything I discovered about RMIT University, along with some photos I took during my month-long visit to Melbourne in early autumn 2025. While it may not boast as many historic buildings as the University of Sydney or the University of Adelaide, RMIT left a lasting impression on me through its striking blend of old charm and innovative modern architecture.
