Canberra Balloon Spectacular is the largest hot air balloon festival in Canberra, Australia, attracting visitors from all over the world to admire. This special festival takes place every March, lasts for 9 days, and is usually held at Patrick White Park , near Canberra City Centre and the Lake Burley Griffin area.

I will be attending this festival in 2025, which will take place from 15 to 23 March. The Canberra Balloon Spectacular starts very early, from 6:30am to 8am on all days of the event. The festival will be cancelled (notified at 6am each day) in case of bad weather (rain or high winds).

You can update information about the event, such as time, festival cancellation notice at the official Fanpage of Events ACT .

And in today's article, I will introduce to you the most beautiful places to take photos of the Canberra Balloon Spectacular festival, follow along.
- Commonwealth Commonwealth Avenue
Address: Google Map
You can get here by private car, or bus R2 or R4 . If you want to take a panoramic view of the city with the hot air balloon, get off at Commonwealth Av Regatta Point stop.
If you want to take pictures of people preparing to inflate the balloon, having breakfast, drinking coffee, and watching the balloon take off, you can stop 1 stop later ( National Library King Edward Tce ).

Commonwealth Avenue has a dedicated pedestrian/bicycle path, and is located at an elevated location, so you can take close-up photos of the hot air balloons, or views from above.

This was the first day I attended the festival, and also the day with the best weather out of the three days I went. The sky was clear, the light yellow sunlight of dawn created a very impressive color for the hot air balloons.

Standing on Commonwealth Avenue, you can also take a picture of the hot air balloon with the Australian Parliament House located at the end of the road.

The hot air balloon shaped like an airplane pilot, the most impressive balloon I saw.

From Commonwealth Avenue , in addition to the Australian Parliament House , you can also capture the beauty of the National Library of Australia and hot air balloons of various shapes flying in the sky.

2. Lake Burley Griffin
Parking address near Lake Burley Griffin: Google Map

You can kayak, or walk around Lake Burley Griffin to take hot air balloon photos with Canberra 's iconic structures.

The hot air balloons fly close to the kayaks, allowing people to easily capture photos and videos.

This year, the balloons will fly from John Dunmore Lang Place to near the National Arboretum Canberra . You can buy tickets to experience flying on a balloon with friends and family, and see the whole city from above here: Canberra Balloon Spectacular | Balloon Aloft Canberra . Ticket prices will range from 325AUD for children and 445AUD for adults.

And my next photo shoot location is also the location where the hot air balloon will land – National Arboretum Canberra .
3. National Arboretum Canberra
Address: Google Map
The National Arboretum Canberra is located on Mount Stromlo . It is a large tree reserve with many rare species and stunning views across the city of Canberra .

Many people bring blankets and snacks to this spot, enjoying a picnic while soaking in the beautiful views with their families.

There is also a spacious area here where children can play and run freely.

By mid-March, Canberra has already entered autumn, and since the hot air balloon viewing takes place early in the morning and at higher altitudes, the weather can be quite cold. It's a good idea to bring warm clothing to stay comfortable before heading out.

Around 8 AM is when most of the hot air balloons start preparing to land. If you're heading to work in the morning, it's advisable to leave early to avoid traffic congestion.
