Bright is a beautiful small town located in the North East of Victoria , in the Australian Alps. Famous for its poetic natural scenery, fresh air and peaceful pace of life, Bright especially attracts tourists every autumn - from mid-April to early May.

In today's article, I will share my 2 days 1 night itinerary to explore Bright , follow along.

First of all, about how to get there, from the center of Melbourne, you can take the train to Bright, depart from Southern Cross station, go to Wangaratta Railway Station , then change trains, go to Alpine Hotel/Anderson St. The total travel time is about 4 and a half hours, quite long and troublesome.

I highly recommend driving yourself to Bright for a more flexible and immersive travel experience. The drive from Melbourne’s city center takes only about 3.5 hours. If you don’t own a car, no worries—you can easily rent one for the day. Most rental services allow you to pick up and return the car near your home, and all you need is an international driving permit.

And here is my detailed 2-day itinerary to explore Bright :

DAY 1: Take photos of the fall foliage around Bright town.

Bright is about 3.5 to 4 hours drive from Melbourne city center, so I left at 6am to have more time to take photos here.

On the way from Melbourne to Bright , you will pass through many beautiful yellow leaf roads, and you can stop to take pictures. I will leave photos and addresses of beautiful yellow leaf photography locations on the way from Melbourne to Bright below for you to easily follow:

  • Myrtle Street (near The Phoenix Tree)

This road is about 30km from Bright town, on the way from Melbourne to Bright , featuring two rows of ancient trees on the roadside, forming a giant "dome" of red leaves.

The best time to visit this spot is in early May, when the leaves are at their most vibrant red. (The photo below was taken on April 19, just as the colors were beginning to peak.)

While you're here, don’t miss “The Phoenix Tree” — a striking art sculpture symbolizing a phoenix rising from the ashes. Created by sculptor Hans Knorr, it was completed in 1986 and adds a unique artistic touch to the natural beauty of the area.

Bright is surrounded by vibrant red foliage in autumn, so it’s not hard at all to find the perfect photo spot—every corner feels like a postcard.

Perhaps the best time to visit Bright is early May , when the leaves all over the town turn yellow and red.

After exploring and snapping photos around town, I hopped back in the car and headed to Ladies Bath Falls—a charming little waterfall nestled at the base of Mount Buffalo.

Next, I made my way to Blue Rag Range Trig Point to camp overnight. Getting there isn’t easy—the road is rough and rocky, so you’ll need a 4WD or AWD vehicle with high ground clearance to reach the summit. But the challenge is worth it for the incredible views and the sense of adventure.

DAY 2: Hiking at Buffalo Mountain.

Mount Buffalo is a granite plateau located in Mount Buffalo National Park , in the North East High Mountains of Victoria , about 30 km from Bright . This is a great destination for those who love outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, kayaking, ...

After capturing some photos, I made my way back to the starting point before dark. The hike from the top of The Monolith to the destination takes about 30 minutes, so be sure to time your trip accordingly.

I finished hiking at 6pm and got on the bus back to Melbourne , ending two days of exploring Bright and Mount Buffalo . This is a reasonable itinerary for those who are planning to combine hiking / camping with viewing the red leaves at a place far from the city.
