Bright is a beautiful small town located in the North East of Victoria , in the Australian Alps. Famous for its poetic natural scenery, fresh air and peaceful pace of life, Bright especially attracts tourists every autumn - from mid-April to early May.

In today's article, I will share my 2 days 1 night itinerary to explore Bright , follow along.
First of all, about how to get there, from the center of Melbourne, you can take the train to Bright, depart from Southern Cross station, go to Wangaratta Railway Station , then change trains, go to Alpine Hotel/Anderson St. The total travel time is about 4 and a half hours, quite long and troublesome.

I highly recommend driving yourself to Bright for a more flexible and immersive travel experience. The drive from Melbourne’s city center takes only about 3.5 hours. If you don’t own a car, no worries—you can easily rent one for the day. Most rental services allow you to pick up and return the car near your home, and all you need is an international driving permit.

And here is my detailed 2-day itinerary to explore Bright :
DAY 1: Take photos of the fall foliage around Bright town.
Bright is about 3.5 to 4 hours drive from Melbourne city center, so I left at 6am to have more time to take photos here.

On the way from Melbourne to Bright , you will pass through many beautiful yellow leaf roads, and you can stop to take pictures. I will leave photos and addresses of beautiful yellow leaf photography locations on the way from Melbourne to Bright below for you to easily follow:
- Myrtle Street (near The Phoenix Tree)
Address: Google Map
This road is about 30km from Bright town, on the way from Melbourne to Bright , featuring two rows of ancient trees on the roadside, forming a giant "dome" of red leaves.

The best time to visit this spot is in early May, when the leaves are at their most vibrant red. (The photo below was taken on April 19, just as the colors were beginning to peak.)

While you're here, don’t miss “The Phoenix Tree” — a striking art sculpture symbolizing a phoenix rising from the ashes. Created by sculptor Hans Knorr, it was completed in 1986 and adds a unique artistic touch to the natural beauty of the area.

- Great Alpine Road
This is the road that stretches from The Phoenix Tree to Bright town, with rows of 40-50m tall yellow-leafed trees along the way.

- Gateway Bright Town.
This is the road that begins in the town of Bright , with two rows of ancient yellow-leafed trees on both sides of the road, where many people stop to take photos and check-in with the Bright sign.

After arriving in Bright , I parked my car at Woolies right at the beginning of town and then walked around the area to take pictures (Woolies Bright offers free parking).
Woolworths Bright Address: Google Map.

Bright is surrounded by vibrant red foliage in autumn, so it’s not hard at all to find the perfect photo spot—every corner feels like a postcard.

And here are some pictures while I Photo walk around the town of Bright:

If you come to Bright at the end of April, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Bright Autumn Festival , a 10-day festival with many exciting activities such as: Town Parade (Gala Day Parade), local fair with mountain specialties, art and photography exhibitions, ...

And below are some pictures of Bright from above, giving you another perspective of this peaceful town.

Perhaps the best time to visit Bright is early May , when the leaves all over the town turn yellow and red.

After exploring and snapping photos around town, I hopped back in the car and headed to Ladies Bath Falls—a charming little waterfall nestled at the base of Mount Buffalo.
Address: Google map.

Next, I made my way to Blue Rag Range Trig Point to camp overnight. Getting there isn’t easy—the road is rough and rocky, so you’ll need a 4WD or AWD vehicle with high ground clearance to reach the summit. But the challenge is worth it for the incredible views and the sense of adventure.

DAY 2: Hiking at Buffalo Mountain.
Mount Buffalo is a granite plateau located in Mount Buffalo National Park , in the North East High Mountains of Victoria , about 30 km from Bright . This is a great destination for those who love outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, kayaking, ...

I started my hike at 11am, starting at Mount Buffalo Lookout , planning to catch the sunset at The Monolith at 5pm, and finish the loop at 6pm. You can see my entire Buffalo Mountain Hiking Trail map at alltrails.com
Your departure address is HERE .

After about 30 to 45 minutes, you'll pass by Lake Catani, a beautiful spot where you can kayak, camp, swim, and even fish—perfect for a quick break or to enjoy the scenery.

The first viewpoint on our hike today was Mt Dunn , a peak of around 1450m, with stunning 360 degree views of the Alps, Ovens Valley and the jungle around Lake Catani .

After about 30 minutes of taking photos, I continued my journey to the next mountain peak. To make sure I was on the right path and not getting lost, you can check the route on the All Trails app. You can see my entire journey today on the All Trails app at the following link: Long Plain, Mollisons Galleries Track, and Monolith Loop.

The next destination was the summit of “The Monolith”, offering a perfect spot to watch the sunset and take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

After capturing some photos, I made my way back to the starting point before dark. The hike from the top of The Monolith to the destination takes about 30 minutes, so be sure to time your trip accordingly.

I finished hiking at 6pm and got on the bus back to Melbourne , ending two days of exploring Bright and Mount Buffalo . This is a reasonable itinerary for those who are planning to combine hiking / camping with viewing the red leaves at a place far from the city.
