How to get to Brighton Beach Brighton Beach:
Brighton Beach is about 13km from the centre of Melbourne , and you can easily get there by public transport or by car:
- By train: From Flinders Street Station, take the Sandringham Line and get off at Brighton Beach Station. From there, it's just a 5–10 minute walk to the beach.
- Bus or Tram: Depending on your starting point, you can also reach Brighton beach, using buses or trams—just check the best route via a transport app.
- By car: If you have your own vehicle or rent one, driving here is very convenient. There's a parking lot right next to the beach.

Brighton Beach is located on the outskirts of Melbourne , so it is usually much quieter than the city centre beaches such as Port Melbourne Beach or St Kilda Beach .

This is also one of the few beaches in Melbourne that is in a drone-free zone – a rarity as big cities like Melbourne and Sydney often have strict regulations on this. Before filming or taking photos with a drone, don’t forget to check the legal flying zone to avoid trouble!

The best time to visit Brighton Beach is from October to April , when the weather is still warm, perfect for swimming, walking or relaxing in the gentle sunshine (in Australia, spring starts in September, and autumn ends in May, somewhat contrary to many other countries in the world).

If you are thinking of renting these colourful houses for a BBQ or a small party, then unfortunately it is not allowed. The Bathing Boxes are private property, owned by local residents through a licence issued by the city council. They are for private use only, not for rent or commercial use .

If you’re planning a small party or a casual picnic with family and friends, be sure to bring along all your food and drinks. There aren’t many shops near the beach, so it’s best to come prepared and enjoy your time without any hassle.

A big plus of Brighton Beach is that the water is much clearer and cleaner than many beaches near the city centre such as St Kilda – which are often crowded and sometimes the sea water is not really ideal for swimming.

And perhaps what makes me most fascinated with Brighton Beach is the sunset moment. This is one of the few places in Melbourne where you can watch the sun slowly sink below the horizon, reflecting a brilliant golden light on the sea – a scene that is both peaceful and overwhelming.

While Melbourne has a myriad of attractions, Brighton Beach holds a special place in my heart – not only for its colourful bungalows and clear waters, but also for the peaceful feeling of watching the sun set over the horizon. If you’re looking for a place that’s both relaxing and packed with the city’s signature character, Brighton Beach is definitely a must-visit.
