Australia is home to more beaches than any other country in the worldover 10,000 , each with its own unique charm and character. In fact, if you visited one beach every day, it would take you almost 30 years to see them all !

Melbourne alone boasts around 25–30 beaches, making it nearly impossible to explore them all on a short trip. That’s why in this article, I’ll introduce you to three of the most beautiful and easily accessible beaches in Melbourne — perfect for soaking in the city’s stunning coastal views without wasting time. Let’s dive in!

  1. Port Melbourne

Port Melbourne Beach is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the CBD by car, and it's also easily accessible via tram on Route 109.

Port Melbourne Beach is a wide, spotless beach that's loved by locals and visitors alike. It’s the perfect place for a morning jog, a game of beach volleyball, or a laid-back picnic with friends and family.

The water at Port Melbourne Beach is shallow, calm, and beautifully clear — making it a safe and relaxing spot for kids or anyone who’s not confident in the water (like me 😄).

Right in the heart of the beach, you’ll find a classic wooden pier stretching about 200 meters out into the sea — like a pathway into the horizon. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, soaking in views of the city skyline, or even casting a fishing line as the sun sets in a golden glow.

One unique feature of the pier is a small staircase that leads directly into the water, making it easy (and fun!) for people to jump in for a swim and climb back up safely — a popular activity on sunny summer days.

Some people even show off with impressive flips and tricks before hitting the water.

From the pier, you’ll get a stunning view of Melbourne’s skyline in the distance — a cluster of towering skyscrapers that perfectly capture the city’s modern charm.

Thanks to its close proximity to the city center, Port Melbourne Beach is surrounded by plenty of shops, restaurants, and cozy cafés. It’s a fantastic spot to hang out with friends, grab a bite to eat, and snap some great photos by the sea.

The beach is also famous for its scenic coastal walking path, the iconic Luna Park, and a lively stretch of bars, restaurants, and bakeries along Acland Street.

St Kilda is home to more eateries and cafés than any other beach in Melbourne — not just along the shoreline, but also on the vibrant food streets nearby. It’s no surprise this beach is always buzzing with tourists looking to enjoy good food with a view.

One of St Kilda’s unique charms is the chance to see wild penguins at sunset in the harbor — a truly special experience you won’t find anywhere else in Melbourne.

In the afternoons, you can hop on boat trips from the pier to see the penguins up close. One popular choice is the the Sunset Penguin Cruise operated by St Kilda Ferry, offering a magical way to experience these charming creatures.

The cruise departs from St Kilda Pier and takes you out to the breakwater, home to around 1,400 Little Penguins. At sunset, you’ll witness these adorable birds returning to their nests after a day spent foraging at sea — a truly magical sight.

The cruise usually departs around 5:20 PM from Wednesday to Sunday, with an extra 6:40 PM trip on Saturdays. On board, you’ll get a closer view of the penguins than from the public viewing areas, plus enjoy expert commentary from experienced guides who share fascinating insights about these charming birds.

In stark contrast to the lively buzz of St Kilda, Brighton Beach offers a peaceful retreat with a relaxed, less crowded vibe — famous especially for its stunningly clear waters.

Brighton Beach is also one of the rare spots in Melbourne where drones are allowed — a big deal since major cities like Melbourne and Sydney usually have strict drone regulations. Just remember to double-check the local rules before flying to stay out of trouble!

If you’re planning a small party or a casual picnic with family and friends, be sure to bring along all your food and drinks. There aren’t many shops near the beach, so it’s best to come prepared and enjoy your time without any hassle.
