As the first ancient capital of Japan , Nara possesses long-standing cultural heritages and peaceful natural scenery. Although it is less than an hour by train from both big cities Kyoto and Osaka , Nara still retains its ancient features and slow pace of life. In this article, I will suggest a detailed itinerary to explore Nara in one day - from famous temples to peaceful little corners that few people know, suitable for both first-time visitors to Nara , and those who want to return to experience Nara more deeply.

One day in Nara (43)

As for transportation, you can easily get to Nara from Osaka or Kyoto by Kintetsu Express train (about 45 minutes). Search for Kintetsu Nara Station on Google Map and follow the directions.

If you plan to visit the Kansai region (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, and Wakayama) for 2-3 days, I highly recommend buying the Kansai Railway Pass to save the most on travel costs possible. You can use this pass for all types of trains running in the Kansai region (including trains from Kansai Airport to Osaka Namba ) for 2 or 3 days (not necessarily consecutive). And you can easily order the Kansai Railway Pass Online HERE .

Next, if you want to rent Yukata and Kimono, you can choose local shops located around Kintetsu Nara Station as well as Nara Park . Today, I chose a Kimono shop located near Higashimuki - a food and shopping street near Kintetsu Nara Station.

Address of the Kimono shop I rented: Google Map (located on the 2nd floor of the building).

One day in Nara (28)

Normally, when people come to Nara, they usually only visit Todai-ji and Nara Park and then go back. However, if you go like that, you will only explore 1/5 of this area, and miss many other famous places. My article today will give you a reasonable schedule so that you can explore Nara Park to the fullest.

  1. Kōfuku-ji Nan'endō (興福寺 南円堂).

Address: Google Map

One Day in Nara (27)

Kōfuku-ji Nan'endō is the ninth temple on the “33 Sacred Sites of Western Japan” pilgrimage route, and is visited by many people. This temple had the participation of Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi – the founder of Koyasan ) in the construction of the altar and was built with the ritual of appeasing the gods of the land.

One day in Nara (44)

In front of Nan'endō is a wisteria trellis, which usually blooms in late April. This scene was once praised as one of the “Eight Views of the Southern Capital” (南都八景) since the Muromachi period.

2. Kōfuku-ji Nakakindo (興福寺 中金堂).

Nakakindo , or Central Hall, is the most important building in the Kōfuku-ji temple complex, located about 200 meters from Nan'endō . Nakakindo was built in 710, and was one of the largest buildings in Nara at that time, with the main statue of Shakyamuni Buddha .

Nakakindo was last rebuilt in 2018, with the goal of recreating the original. What is special about this reconstruction is the complete gilding of the Shakyamuni Buddha statue in the main hall, showing the majesty and sacredness of Buddha.

I will attach an illustration of my Nara Park exploration schedule today below for your convenience.

After exploring Kofuku-ji , I moved on to the next destination, Manyo Botanical Gardens, a huge botanical garden located right in the heart of Nara Park.

One day in Nara (2)

On the way from Kofuku-ji to Manyo Botanical Gardens , you will also pass by many interesting photo spots. Let's see some pictures from my perspective:

The road to Manyo Botanical Gardens is also located within Nara Park – the “miniature deer kingdom” , so it is not difficult for you to see small deer along the way.

According to a 2024 census, there are about 1,300 deer living freely in Nara Park . The main food of these deer is the plants around the park, as well as Shika Senbei - a type of cake specifically for deer, sold everywhere around the park, making it easy for visitors to buy and feed the deer, as well as take pictures with them.

A small shop in Nara Park sells Shika Senbei, only 200 JPY for a pack of 10-15 pieces.

One interesting thing I observed is that the deer here are very "subtle" in that they never come to "disturb" the Senbei sellers, but usually only come to "beg" for food from tourists who have bought the cakes.

One Day in Nara (57)

You can buy deer food and take pictures like this anywhere in Nara Park, a very interesting experience that is rarely found anywhere else in the world.

It takes about half an hour to walk from Kofuku-ji to Manyo Botanical Gardens , combining walking with taking photos. The entrance fee to Manyo Botanical Gardens is 700 JPY for adults. The best time to visit this garden is around March to April , when the garden is filled with the colors of more than 200 wisteria flowers of about 20 different varieties in full bloom.

4. Kasugataisha shrine

Kasugataisha shrine is a temple located right next to Manto Botanical Garden, has more than 1,000 years of history and played an important role in ancient Japanese politics and religion.

Kasuga Taisha is famous for the more than 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns that line the grounds of the shrine. Every February 3, the Setsubun Mantoro festival is held here, where all the lanterns are lit. This festival has been held for more than 800 years, and many famous people have donated lanterns over the years.

5. Mizuya Chaya

Mizuya Chaya is a great lunch break spot during my one-day itinerary exploring Nara Park. This is a traditional Japanese teahouse, with an ancient straw roof, outdoor wooden tables, red tatami-covered chairs, serving a variety of Japanese food/drinks, such as Udon, soba, mochi, dango, matcha, …

After lunch break, I moved to the central area of Nara Park to take pictures with the deer there.

6. Nara Park.

If you want to take pictures with deer in the most beautiful setting, you should go to the central area of Nara Park. This place has a large green lawn, next to peaceful ponds and a traditional Japanese garden.

Before you come here, remember to buy Shika Senbei to feed the deer to get the best photos.

Most of the deer are friendly, and some will even bow when you feed them. However, some are quite bold and can become aggressive if you hold a snack and don’t feed it. So always be careful when walking around with snacks in this area.

Summer is the breeding season for the deer in Nara Park, so this is also the time when they look their best to attract mates, with their golden fur and white spots all over their bodies. Pay attention to this detail before you plan a trip to Nara .

And here I have completed a day of exploring Nara Park , with 9 different famous places. Next, I moved to Higashimuki shopping street near Kintetsu Nara Station to eat and rest, before returning to Osaka.

10. Tonkatsu Ganko Nara

This is a pretty good Tonkatsu restaurant located on Higashimuki shopping street. If you are a fan of beef, there is also a Gyukatsu restaurant nearby that is worth a try.

11. Nakatanidou (中谷堂)

Nakatanidou (中谷堂) in Nara is famous for its “高速餅つき” – high-speed mochi pounding – performance right in front of the store, attracting a large crowd of viewers every day.

One Day in Nara (77)

They specialize in serving yomogi mochi (mochi savoury with mugwort) with red bean filling, which is freshly pounded, soft, warm, with a light, rich flavour that is very easy to eat – only about 180–200 yen each. The shop is only about a 5-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, very convenient for travel.
