Japan seems to be blessed by nature with flowers blooming almost year-round, except for winter. After the pink hues of cherry blossoms and wisteria in March and April, May brings another wave of vibrant reds and pinks with azaleas (Tsutsuji). Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of the most breathtaking spots in the Kansai region to admire azaleas—the Katsuragi Mountain Plateau in Nara.

How to get there: First you need to go to JR Gose or Kintetsu Gose station.

The closest train station to Katsuragi Highlands is Gose Station.

The bus stop is located in front of Kintetsu Gose Station. From there, go straight to the final stop, which is Katsuragi Ropeway Zen Bus Stop. Then, take the cable car to the top of Mount Katsuragi.

Cable car ticket prices are 1000 JPY for a one-way trip up, and 1500 JPY for a round trip (up and down).

After taking the cable car, just climb about 500 meters more to reach the azalea plateau.

At the summit of Mount Katsuragi, visitors will find a restaurant serving meals, as well as snack shops offering treats like ice cream and grilled dango.

After that, we will reach the first check point, Yamatokatsuragisan, with an altitude of 959 meters.

This mountain is an extremely suitable place to have a picnic with relatives and friends.
And finally, our destination today.

There are many places here for people to sit, eat, rest, or take check-in photos.

Or you can be creative like this 😀

The landscape here is adorned with three distinct and captivating colors: the vibrant red of azalea blossoms, the green of the mountain's verdant foliage, and the white of clouds painting the backdrop.

From the summit of Mount Katsuragi, you can observe visitors relaxing and picnicking below, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

From the summit, numerous trails diverge in various directions, offering a multitude of vantage points for photography enthusiasts.

Today, I picked a small trail in the middle of the mountain because it was less crowded, and there were many spots where trees grew into beautiful circular arches.

Along the way, there are many beautiful shooting angles like this.
Or shooting angles looking down like this.

The azaleas here also come in a wide variety of colors, ranging from pink, purple, light red to deep red, and more.

Really overwhelmed with this scene. View from below to the top of the mountain.
There are also lots of places for people to sit and picnic at the bottom.

There is no nearby supermarket here, so if you're planning to buy picnic supplies with friends or family, it's best to prepare and bring everything with you in advance.

Rest and picnic areas for everyone are below.

Let's take a look at some of the angles I captured while shooting from the bottom to the top of the mountain:

The cable car operates until 5:00 p.m., so to avoid the crowds, it's recommended to leave by 4:00 p.m. Additionally, if you'd like to watch the sunset, you can take a walk along the trail from the top to the bottom of the mountain.

The best time for the flowers to bloom is from May 10 to May 17 each year, so be sure to check the weather before planning your visit.

And finally, the author of today. Thank you for reading until the end of the post 😀
