Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, and Australia’s second-largest city, is renowned for its unique blend of historic charm and modern sophistication. Frequently ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities, Melbourne boasts an excellent public transport system, a vibrant multicultural festival scene, a diverse culinary landscape, and year-round international sporting and arts events.

Melbourne - one of the most livable cities in the world.
Melbourne – one of the most livable cities in the world.

In today’s post, I’ll be sharing a complete itinerary covering the most exciting places to visit in Melbourne, along with tips on the best ways to get to each destination. Let’s dive in!

1. hotel (1)

Let’s start with transportation. Unlike Sydney, Melbourne doesn’t have a direct train connection from the airport to the city center. The most common option is Skybus , which runs directly from the airport to Southern Cross Station in central Melbourne. From there, you can easily catch a tram to your hotel.

Image
Double decker buses run from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross Station and back.

Skybus ticket prices from Melbourne Airport to the city center:

Adults: AUD 24 (one-way), AUD 41 (return)

Children (aged 4–16): AUD 4 (one-way), AUD 6 (return)

Tickets are valid for 90 days from the date of purchase, and can be used on any service throughout the day—there’s no need to book a specific time, which makes it perfect for travelers with flexible schedules. The SkyBus pick-up point is conveniently located right outside the airport terminal, so there’s minimal walking required.

Make sure to book your SkyBus tickets online before arriving in Melbourne to save time and money. I’ll drop the booking link here for you: SkyBus Melbourne Tullamarine Airport Express Ticket.

Melbourne has three main forms of public transport: the subway (train), trams, and buses. All services use the myki cards for payment—cash is not accepted. So, as soon as you arrive at Southern Cross Station, it’s a good idea to buy a myki card from the self-service machines to make your travel easier. (As of July 2025, Melbourne still doesn’t support contactless credit card payments on public transport like Sydney does.)

If you're traveling with a group, you might also consider renting a car for more flexibility and potential cost savings—it starts from as little as AUD 30 per day, with pickup available from various locations across the city. I’ll drop the link below for you: Melbourne Car Rental.

In the next section, I’ll introduce you to some of the most exciting spots in Melbourne - including both iconic landmarks and hidden gems that are often overlooked. I’ve grouped them by location to help make your itinerary more convenient and efficient.

  1. Central Business District (CBD).

In Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD), tram rides are completely free within the designated Free Tram Zone—a big plus for visitors looking to explore the city easily and affordably. Below, I’ve listed the most interesting attractions in the heart of Melbourne. Let’s take a look!

  • Flinders street station

This was the very first spot I came to when I arrived in Melbourne. It’s one of the busiest stations in the city, linking both inner-city and suburban train routes.

Opened in 1910, Flinders Street Station is the oldest railway station in Australia and has become one of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks.

  • Bright

Bright is a charming little town in northeastern Victoria, nestled in the foothills of the Australian Alps.
